Do you know RON (remote online notary)?

COVID gave us many things. But in real estate, perhaps the best thing it gave us was Remote Online Notarization (RON). This method of notarizing documents, as the name suggests, signors no longer need to be in the same room as the notary. Reviewing and signing documents is now allowable online in the State of New Jersey. You can be anywhere in the world, anytime of day or night. The notary is the only person who needs to be in New Jersey for your documents to be recorded or considered legally binding. But is it safe and secure? The point of an in person notary is to ensure the authenticity of the person signing the documents. How can a notary be sure?

How it works

From invitation to completion, the Remote Online Notary experience happens in just two phases.

Phase 1: Knowledge Based Authentication & ID Verification
A 2 step verification process is completed to prevent identity fraud. The first step utilizes information about the signor. The platform generates a series of questions for the signer to answer based on known information. The next step uses a cell phone to capture an image of the front and back of the person’s NJ issued ID as well as a selfie.

Phase 2: Online Signing
Once authenticated and verified, access to the online signing room is granted where the notary and documents are waiting. Once completed, the executed documents are shared with the desired parties and the recorded video session is stored.

How much does Remote Online Notary services cost

As you may expect, this convenience is more expensive than visiting a notary public in person. This process requires additional coordination and time, not to mention these hyper-secure technology platforms were expensive to develop. However the convenience and ease far makes up for it. It’s a good idea to compare costs before scheduling the service.

What documents need a notary

Many affidavits, real estate deeds, easements, mortgages, powers of attorney, health care directives/proxies and other types of documents must be properly notarized to become legally binding. In addition, many types of letters, authorizations and documents used in international trade and travel require the acknowledgement of a notary public.

And just like that, the world just became a little smaller. Since the pandemic, the population’s comfort with online video conferencing is now commonplace. Having the convenience of RON (remote online notary) not only saves time, but saves money in travel costs. RON is sure to become a household name.
